Knighton, also known as Tref-y-Clawdd, or 'The Town on the Dyke', is set in the Teme Valley, close to the Shropshire border which follows the river. Sheltered by hills, this town of about 3000 sits partially in the valley floor, with the older part [including the town centre] straddling a hill. The railway was important in bringing trade and wealth to Knighton. The Heart of Wales railway line still serves the town, but is a shadow of its former self.
Offa's Dyke long distance footpath runs through Knighton - the only town it actually runs through, and Knighton's Offa's Dyke Centre has more information about the path.
For its size, Knighton has a good number of modern amenities including Tuffin's huge supermarket, a petrol station with reasonable prices, three cashpoint machines, two banks [Midland and Barclays], too many pubs to mention, a Chinese and an Indian takeaway, shops open late [Spar until 9.30, Costcutter until 10pm, not quite so late on Sunday], also hairdressers, picture framers and gift shop, hardware stores, agricultural suppliers, furnishers, antique shop, cafes, estate agents, car dealers, bed and breakfast, dentist, Knighton Mid Wales doctors etc.
A great place to live and work, also a good holiday base - the Knighton website will show you it.
